Basing its content on evidence based scientific research such as the work of Professor Lisa Feldman Barrett, this course dispels some of the established myths around human engagement.  The course focuses on the key attributes of person to person skills. The phrase ‘people person’ is often misconstrued as something we either have or not. Some people are particularly gifted with an ease around their colleagues but just like technical or academic skills, these rarely come without training and practice. Overview:

The course encourages the candidates to engage from the outset. Assertiveness can often be mistaken for confrontation, but lack of assertion is just as likely to lead to situations of conflict by allowing ambiguity to drive the agenda. This can be wasteful and destructive. The candidates are introduced to basic intervention strategies and then given the opportunity to develop their own version. As humans, we are genetically programmed to receive and deliver stories. We start this essential skill as young children then too often as adults delegate this function to electronic media. Although the basic principles of mindfulness originate in the Buddhist, Zen and Tibetan meditation techniques, the benefits of mindfulness and meditation are supplemented by an increasing body of academic research. The course allows candidates to discover some of the origins of the method but rapidly embarks into the practical application of mindfulness. Using practical meditation techniques, candidates will be encouraged to consider their thoughts and the effect of their feelings.
